Royal Easter Show 2022

Sydney Royal Easter Show 2022 saw the Square Meater breed shine in the carcase entry of the Hook and Hook competition.

Three Steers prepared and exhibited by Penola Catholic College and St Gregory’s College were entered into The Big Show in April 2022. The Steers originally purchased from Palmerston Holdings (Gloucester) and Weethalle Square Meaters (Boorowa) were at the schools for 5 months where they were halter trained, grown out and prepared for the show.

The below results were achieved from the steers at Sydney Royal:

Palmerston White Magic

Weethalle Theodore

Palmerston Simon

Weethalle Theodore

  • ‘Palmerston White Magic’ – St Gregory’s College – 2nd place in Carcase class scoring 87.5/100 receiving a silver medal.

  • ‘Palmerston Simon’ – Penola Catholic College – 2nd place in Carcase class scoring 86.5/100 receiving a bronze medal.

  • ‘Weethalle Theodore’ – Penola Catholic College – scored an 81.5/100 receiving a bronze medal.

All steers were then entered in the Stanhill competition which is when all the breeds select three animals to represent the breed. 11 breeds in total were entered in the competition with the Square Meaters coming in 3rd place with a total combined carcase score of 255.5 out of a possible 300 and only 1.5 points behind Angus in 2nd place. This was an amazing achievement and all schools should be commended for their efforts.

Both schools are preparing and getting ready for another big show year in 2023!
